Major tourist attractions include US Government - National
Park Service, Douglas Center for Environmental Education and Majestic Star
Casino. Notable churches in the city include Abundant Life Tabernacle,
Abyssinian Missionary Baptist Church, Allen Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal
Church, Angel of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Galilee Baptist Church, Jesus
Gift Apostolic Church, Prayer Outreach Deliverance Church, Pentacostal Church of
God and Prayer House of Faith. The Gary Bathing Beach Aquatorium, built in 1921,
is one of the first examples of modular block construction in the world. Other
notable building is the City Methodist Church, which is a massive Gothic
structure of limestone, completed in 1926.
The 4th July is one of the biggest festivities of the year in
Gary. The festival includes an Independence Day parade, fireworks in most parks,
and a two day Independence Day Music Festival. Gary Air Show is organized in
mid-July in Marquette Park. In this free show military and civilians perform
acrobatics in the air. The Jazz Festival is held in August and Labor Day Blues
Festival is held in September.
GYY (Gary/Chicago International Airport) is operating as the
"third airport" for the Chicago area. Boeing has already base their corporate
fleets here. NICTD (Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District) operates
the South Shore Line, a commuter rail system, running between Chicago and South
Bend. GPTC (Gary Public Transportation Corporation) is a commuter bus system,
which offers service to numerous stops throughout the city and neighboring
suburbs. Highways like Interstate 65 , Interstate 80, Interstate 90 and
Interstate 94 run through Gary. U.S. Routes 12 and 20 and Indiana State Road 312
and Indiana State Road 912 also run through Gary.
General Information
Gary was often called “Steel City”, because once it was a
leading steel producing center. Gary is situated on the beautiful shores of Lake
Michigan and on three major Interstate. Gary is the perfect location for a
weekend getaway, a family vacation, a business trip, or a night on the town.
The city was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation for its new
plant. The city was named after the chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H. Gary.
According to Morgan Quitno's 2007 analysis of crime rates (City Crime Rankings,
14th Edition), Gary was rated the 17th most dangerous city in the United States.
Gary earned the number one position in the "Top 10 Markets for Real Estate
Investing", which represents activity of investors who purchase homes below
market and then sell. According to Forbes Magazine, Gary is listed as 39th of
their Top 100 Best Cities for the Jobs in 2008.
Demographic Information
Gary city is the largest city in Lake County, Indiana, United
States. Gary is located at 41°34′51″N, 87°20′44″W (41.580786, -87.345449) at
around 600 feet above the sea level. According to the United States Census
Bureau, the city has a total area of 57.2 square miles (148.3 km²). The city is
situated in the southeastern portion of the Chicago metropolitan area and is
approximately 25 miles from downtown Chicago. As of the census of 2000, there
were 102,746 people, 38,244 households, and 25,623 families residing in the
city. The population density was 2,045.5 people per square mile (789.8/km²).
Gary is the fourth-largest city in the state and also the largest U.S. city
founded in the twentieth century.
